Bolton Family Playing Music

Every year, I {Ashley}, try and pick a personal photo project to work on. This year it’s families engaging in their favorite activity. I wanted to get back to my photojournalism roots and focus on the story telling aspects.

The first one presented is of the Miller family out of Bolton who love to play music. Below is what Lysa wrote about her family and why playing music is important to them.

As I child my mother played us songs on the piano that my sister and I would dance to. Family gatherings featured my extremely talented Uncle playing all kinds of classical pieces. I have always loved playing instruments, but life takes over and you don’t take time.

After both my sons were old enough I let them choose and instrument. I decided to support them and take lessons with them and get back into playing music again myself.

Now it’s a fight over the music room. As soon as one person starts on an instrument another comes in and starts jamming on theirs, and so on and so on. They also play in the school band and love that experience also.

I introduce my five year old to the violin but that has yet to work out. They all enjoy banging on the piano, picking at guitars and the most of, singing together.

I grew up in the Maritimes (Altantic Canada) Where fiddle playing, and kitchen parties are weekend occasions. Playing the spoons is something almost every maritimer can do!!
