Kids Being Kids

As families grow so do its individual members.  It’s important to us to capture each child at their particular stage in their life, so we would never photograph a 2 year old the same way we would a 6 year old. Having them bring in objects (toys, books, games and dress-ups) that they love sometimes helps bring out their individuality. It’s also important that the kids have fun during the session because that’s when we can capture their true personalities.

Sessions with siblings are usually very high energy and it can be challenging to keep their interest for the entire session. However, when we love photographing brothers and sisters together because when they interact with each other it is completely genuine. Even if the photography experience is new to them, they have their support network right there and that adds to the atmosphere both in the studio and on location.

Our job is pretty fun, don’t you think?

A Smooth Transition from Wedding Photography into Family Photography

Lowell, MA – Here’s a look at Addison’s newborn portraits from last fall. She was about a month old at the time and did a great job posing it up for the camera. Of course our favorite photo is the one where her older brother is holding her… priceless!

Our venture into family photography started when our wedding clients began having children. They would call us with their exciting news and in that instant we moved beyond the role of wedding photographer into the role of family photographer. The experience of a wedding really brings us into the lives of our clients, so when it is time for them to start a family they can still rely on our photography to capture the joy and love of family.

New Account or New Friends?

(This entry was inspired by a heartfelt email we received from a client)

Being invited to photograph a wedding is not just about signing a contract or getting a new account. There are so many options out there for wedding photography, so when a couple invites us to be their photographers it is something more than just a business transaction. It is an honor and a privilege and we take this work very seriously. In essence, we are entrusted to capture the moments and beauty of a celebration of life and love, and in order for us to do this effectively we give all of our attention and skill into our efforts. It’s standard for us to go the extra mile to make sure the bride and groom are taken care of, not because it’s in the contract but because that’s just how we work.

Since we’ve begun photographing weddings we have met some really remarkable people. The initial consultation is almost like a first date, and will definitely set the tone for the relationship.  When we opened the door to let them in we were all strangers, but as they left there was a budding friendship in the midst. The very nature of the work requires us to form a relationship with all of our couples, their families and friends. When we arrive as the bride and groom are getting ready, they are surrounded by only their closest friends and family… and us. There needs to be a comfortable level of trust, acceptance and personal familiarity, which is impossible to attain in a standard business transaction.

The best piece of advice out there for finding your ideal wedding photographer(s), other than finding a style that you like and pricing that matches your budget,  would be to seek out someone whose personality clicks with yours. Can you picture yourself spending 8 plus hours working with them on your wedding day, plus countless hours on album and order fulfillment?

Any wedding photographer or any wedding professional, for that matter, who loves their job is going to feel the same way about client relationships. The ones that don’t are the salesmen of the industry and they will probably get you a good price, but at what cost?

The images below are representational of a bride and groom comfortable with their wedding photographers.

Mark Higgins and Family!

Lowell, MA – We had the pleasure of meeting Mark Higgins at ‘critique night’ over at MKD’s house about a year ago. This past year we’ve met some great photographers at ‘critique night’ and in process we’ve made some new friends. So as similar minds like to share ideas and talent we proposed a swap with Mark. We would photograph his family and in return he would evaluate our color correction on our monitors (he’s a whiz). It worked out perfectly, we got some great tips and reassurance that our workflow was on the right path, and Mark received our studio portrait experience. It was a fun session; the kids were energetic and expressive and Mark is such a great dad. We will definitely be doing another session in the future, maybe a location session next time.

We owe a big “THANKS” to Mark and the kids, you guys are the best!
