Coastal Maine | Marginal Way | Footbridge Beach

Ogunquit, ME – On a beautiful evening in May we had the pleasure of photographing Angela + Sean’s engagement session. We always like the couple to choose their location because it gives the experience a little familiarity for them and is a tremendous ice breaker between photographer and subject. They chose their favorite vacation spot, Ogunquit Maine.

Competition Shmompetition

The Family Portrait Session at York Beach, ME

Meet our friends Mike, Kate and Emmie and Chase.

We contacted Mike and Kate last January-ish, after we had seen their website, loved their photography but it was after reading their bio that we just had to meet them. They invited us over and we just talked about photography, life, business, marriage and all that. Chase was asleep, but Emmie made a necklace for Ashley and put some reindeer antlers on my head (which I kept on for way too long). It was a refreshing feeling to have some super talented people open their homes and their lives to us and share their experiences as photographers and parents. Soon enough Ashley and I are going to be married and have the “husband + wife” photo team title, so it was important to talk with others and find new perspectives on blending life and work.

It’s always funny when we are speaking with friends and relatives who aren’t photographers, because when we tell them that we hang out with a lot of Boston Area Photographers, they say things like, “Well aren’t they your competition?” Uh… kindasorta, maybe but not really when you think of the amount of people out there seeking professional photography. There are a ton of photographers out there and the majority of us get clients because of our work, yes, but also because of our personalities. It’s not like the phone book days where a photographers market was hyper-local, clients can now find us from all over the state, region and country. So when it comes down to it we don’t view our photography community as “competition”, we view them as “colleagues”, because when its all said in done we are striving to make the industry as a whole succeed and it all starts with solid support network.

Plus if photographers were not allowed to talk with other photographers about geeky tech talk, products, marketing pieces, etc… we would either: a. explode or b. bore all of our friends and family endlessly… So I say “competition, shmompetition” we heart MKD and family.

A few months back we had the privilege of having them photograph us, check it out here. Below is our repayment session at York Beach… super fun! Thanks guys!

Susan + Charlie – Engagement Session – York Beach, Maine

York Beach, Maine has been a hot spot of engagement session activity for us over the last few weeks.

First, we had a great session with Chris and Lyndsey and then had the opportunity with Susan and Charlie just a couple weeks later. The only challenge was that these two couples are friends, so it was very important to us that we make different images from the session. We don’t like taking the same pictures over and over again, after all where’s the challenge in that.

Engagement sessions are the absolute best way to get to know our couples, that is why we include them in all of our wedding collections. Lets face it, most people hate to be photographed, and its our job to make them feel comfortable. When people turn to us towards the end of the shoot and say “wow, this was actually fun,” it underlines the importance of the session. So when their wedding day comes they are not going to be preoccupied or distracted by having a photographer present. And for us, we feel a little less like strangers and a little more like friends.

Big Thanks to Susan + Charlie!
